Due to the growing energy demands of emerging markets (China, India, etc.), the decreasing availability of fossil fuel reserves, the resulting increase in fuel prices, and the negative environmental impact of fossil fuel use - namely the greenhouse effect - energy (in)efficiency has become one of the most significant global issues in recent years. The challenge of energy management is particularly pronounced in industry, as a major consumer of energy.
This is precisely the purpose of the ISO 50001:2011 standard, which supports companies and other organizations in developing systems and processes designed to improve energy efficiency. By defining and implementing an energy management system, organizations:
- define an “Energy Policy” and communicate it to employees
- appoint an Energy Manager / Management Representative for Energy
- identify and assess areas with a significant impact on energy consumption
- establish an energy baseline for monitoring energy performance
- identify and monitor energy consumers
- continuously improve the Energy Management System (EnMS) and optimize processes relevant to energy consumption
- regularly (at least annually) evaluate the effectiveness of the energy management system
